Intercultural Business English Program

How does the Fluency Program Work?

The Fluency: Intercultural Business English Program offers training for intermediate to advanced-level clients. A Global Immersions Fluency Coordinator will contact you upon receipt of your application to answer questions and develop a customized curriculum.

The Program Components

The standard nine-day immersion program begins on arrival in Boston on Saturday, and ends the following Sunday. The course consists of around 33 hours of intensive training, broken down into 45-minutes sessions. Additional weeks and hours are available upon request.

Over the course of the curriculum, we cover four standard topics:

  1. U.S. Language and Culture
We focus on developing skills in listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and grammar. Our approach to teaching grammar is point-of-use correction, followed by detailed study, dependent on your skill level. Idioms, vocabulary, and aspects of U.S. culture are addressed within the program manual and other written texts. Small talk and social skills are part of the training dynamics, and scheduled and suggested cultural activities offer additional insight into U.S. culture.

  2. Intercultural Communication
Trainers work with individual clients on relevant culture-specific topics (for example, U.S. versus German language communication issues and styles) and provide culture-general training sessions and materials.
  3. U.S. Business Culture and Etiquette
The Program manual, supplemental materials, and training sessions address a variety of business topics, explaining U.S. business culture and communication styles. Areas of focus include:

    • Meetings & presentations
    • Telephoning & email
    • Negotiation skills
    • Marketing
    • Intercultural and international management behavior
    • Business vocabulary
    • Business writing
    • Business case studies and role plays
    • Reading and understanding U.S. business newspapers and journals
    • Business library research
  4. Professional Contact with U.S. Counterpart
We arrange a professional conversation with a U.S. counterpart, in order to provide experience with business communication. Clients repeatedly express how useful, educational and enjoyable they find this session.

(If required, 3 hours of training can be substituted instead of Professional Contact.)

The Trainers

All Global Immersions Fluency trainers have extensive experience training professionals from all over the world, and at various levels of English fluency. Our trainers offer the following:

Executive Bed & Breakfast Homestay

The Homestay experience allows for a greater understanding of U.S. culture and continual practice in a non-structured environment. It is the perfect way to learn about U.S. culture and day-to-day living. All our hosts have experience in hosting international visitors and are continuously trained about cultural differences. Each client is matched appropriately with their host depending on Homestay preferences. The Executive Bed & Breakfast Homestay includes a fully furnished, clean and comfortable private bedroom, study space, continental breakfast (self-served), Internet access, shared bath, local telephone, laundry facilities, television and all utilities and is within walking distance to public transportation (30-45 minutes to downtown Boston destinations).
